Exercising in a Green Space Boosts Health

May 4, 2010

If you ever ask yourself if you should go to the gym or the park to exercise, a group of UK researchers apparently have an answer. In a comparative analysis of 10 studies covering over 1,250 people, a group of researchers found fast improvement in mood and self-esteem in as little as 5 minutes, doing outdoors activities such as walking, gardening, cycling, fishing, boating or horseback riding in a park, garden or nature trail.

Even better for us New Yorkers, a bigger effect was seen when exercise in an area that also contained water. There was also a correlation with age, suggesting the strongest impact was on young people and those with mental health concerns. This research also has many implications for those of us suffering from stress, anxiety and depression, as well as substance abuse issues.
