What Acupuncture Is
(and How It Works)

Acupuncture involves the placement of very thin, sterile needles at specific points on the body. It has been practiced for centuries and is now one of the more widely studied forms of complementary medicine in the world.

Most people are surprised by how little they feel during treatment — and by how deeply relaxed they become once the needles are in place.

What the Needles Actually Do

The exact mechanisms aren't fully understood. What has traditionally been explained as various expressions of Qi, research now suggests it may work through several measurable pathways:

  • Nervous system response. Needle stimulation appears to influence how the nervous system processes pain signals and regulates the body's stress response.
  • Local tissue effects. Needling can prompt changes in the surrounding connective tissue and may improve circulation to areas that are slow to recover.
  • Parasympathetic activation. Many patients shift into a state of deep relaxation during treatment — a sign that the body is moving away from a "fight-or-flight" state toward rest and recovery.

These effects are not universal, and individual responses vary. But for many people, regular treatment creates a distinct and meaningful shift in how the body feels and functions.

What the Research Says

Acupuncture has been studied for a broad range of conditions. According to the National Center for Complementary and Integrative Health (NCCIH), research has shown it may be helpful for pain conditions including back pain, neck pain, knee pain from osteoarthritis, and postoperative pain — and there is also evidence it may help with seasonal allergy symptoms, nausea related to cancer treatment, and other concerns.

Evidence is stronger for some conditions than others, and results vary from person to person. At Olo, we aim to give you an honest picture of what acupuncture can and can't do — and to support your care with that honesty at the center.

Acupuncture at Olo

Olo offers two settings for acupuncture: Community Room and Private Room. Both are provided by the same team of licensed, highly trained acupuncturists. The difference is the environment, not the quality of care. When relevant to your treatment, your acupuncturist may also incorporate adjunct techniques such as cupping, moxa or gua sha at no additional cost.

Community Room

Our Community Room is a shared treatment space where several patients receive care at the same time, each resting in a reclining chair or on a table. It's calm, quiet, and purposefully designed to support deep rest.

The community acupuncture model in the US grew out of a tradition of accessible, community-centered care — the idea that effective treatment shouldn't require a private room and a boutique price. Many patients find the shared space adds something rather than taking anything away: a collective quiet that deepens the rest. It also allows your practitioner to check in, adjust, and observe over the course of a treatment in a way that's not always possible in a single private session.

Community Room Acupuncture Is A Great Fit If You
  • Want high-quality care at a more accessible price point
  • Are comfortable resting in a shared space
  • Don't require a full one-on-one check-in every treatment

How to Choose

Not sure which room is right for you? It's a common question.

Many patients start in the Community Room and stay there — it's effective, affordable, and the shared environment can be surprisingly peaceful. Others prefer the Private Room from the start or move there when their care needs become more complex. Some patients use both, depending on the reason for their visit, as well as scheduling or provider availability.

If you're unsure, feel free to contact us before booking — we're happy to help you figure out what makes the most sense for where you are right now.

Your First Five Visits

If you're new to acupuncture, your first few visits are a little different from regular return appointments. At Olo, all new acupuncture patients go through our Foundations in Balance program — a structured sequence of five visits designed to orient you to acupuncture, help us understand your health history and goals, and give you (and us) a real sense of how your body responds to treatment.

The Foundations in Balance Program

Over your first five visits, you'll move from an in-depth initial consultation and treatment, through follow-up consultations and regular return visits, to a closing check-in appointment where your acupuncturist can assess how you've responded and discuss a plan for any ongoing care needed.

An Intro Offer is available for new acupuncture patients: purchase all five Foundations in Balance visits as a package and save 25%. Both Community Room and Private Room packages are available. You can also purchase each visit individually if a package doesn't work for you.

What to Expect at Your First Appointment

Your first appointment will typically last about an hour and a half.

Here's a brief overview:

  • Arrival – Check in at the front desk. Grab water, use the restroom.
  • Consultation – You'll meet privately with your acupuncturist to go over your health history, chief complaints, and any questions you have. Community Room patients meet in a dedicated consultation room. Your acupuncturist will take your pulse, observe your tongue, and may palpate specific points or channels.
  • Treatment – Community Room patients will move into the Community Room and get settled; Private Room patients will settle in where they are. Your acupuncturist will then place the needles. Most go on the arms and legs below the elbows and knees, though other points may be used depending on your condition.
  • Rest – Most patients relax deeply — often falling asleep. When the treatment is complete, you'll feel naturally ready to get up.
  • Post-treatment – Take a moment getting up. You may feel rested, energized, spacey, or a little foggy — all normal. Check out at the front desk and schedule your next visit or follow up with your practitioner.

A Few Things To Know Before Your Visit
    • Complete your health history form online before your appointment — a link will be sent by email after booking. If you'd prefer to fill it out at the clinic, let us know in advance so we can have it set up and ready when you arrive early.
    • Wear loose, comfortable clothing so we can access your arms and legs below the elbows and knees.
    • Don't arrive starving or stuffed — a light meal or snack 1–2 hours before is ideal.
