Results vary, and how quickly you feel a shift depends on what brought you in. Some patients notice meaningful relief — less pain, calmer sleep, lower stress — after a single session. For others, it takes three to six visits before changes start to hold between treatments. Acute issues (a recent muscle strain, a tension headache) often respond faster than chronic conditions that have built up over months or years.
Progress can also be slower if something in your daily life is actively aggravating the condition — a workout routine when treating an ankle injury, or long days at the computer when you have back pain or headaches. We'll talk through what's helping and what's getting in the way as we go.
A 2017 review in The Journal of Pain found that benefits from acupuncture for chronic pain typically build over a course of treatment and persist for up to a year afterward, which is why we generally recommend giving the process a few weeks before judging whether it's working.
If you don't notice any change after about four to six sessions, we'll talk through it honestly with you and either adjust the approach or help you think about other options. Read more on our about acupuncture page.
