Welcoming Autumn with Open Arms

September 22, 2013

The Autumn Equinox has arrived! Here are some simple steps you can take to stay healthy as the weather becomes cooler.

Changing from warm to cooler weather can leave us vulnerable. It’s very important that you think warm to help your body adapt:

  • Dress in layers. Pretend you are visiting San Francisco in August and come prepared by wearing layers. It is better to be overdressed than to be caught catching a chill as the sun is setting and the temperature is dipping.
  • Wear a scarf. Scarves are your friends. It’s very important to keep your neck area covered as windy days are common in autumn and being exposed can literally “chill you to the bone!”
  • Consume warm food & drinks.  As we say goodbye to the last of the fresh local summer veggies, we welcome in the abundance of autumn root vegetables. Think cooked carrots, squash and hearty greens such as napa cabbage, kale and brussel sprouts.
  • Stay hydrated. All things become drier as the humidity of summer recedes. Drink plenty of water and herbal tea to make sure your body replenishes its reserve. Warm and room temperature beverages are best.
  • Get plenty of rest. You might notice that your energy levels are not what they were during the summer months. Don’t fight the feeling. Autumn is the beginning of a slower time of year. Go to bed earlier and take naps if you need to.
  • Catch some rays. Get as much sun as you can while you can. It’s common to feel a little down this time of year as autumn is associated with grief. Warming yourself in sunshine can help boost your mood!

Follow these tips and you should transition with ease into the winter season. Most importantly though, take stock of the past year’s bounty so you can prepare for next year.

Happy Autumn!
