Spring Spruce Up: Yoga Style

April 25, 2014

Still feeling sluggish as we slowly move into Springtime? There's a way to help you lighten up and lighten your load! Ayurveda, the sister science to Yoga, believes Spring, (or Kapha Season) is a time to shed your winter coat and create more sukha in your life. Sukha means good space, or an overall state of wellbeing, which can increase energy, positivity, health and happiness. Similarly to Ayurveda, Chinese Medicine emphasizes the importance of making room for the energy of the Springtime element, wood, to grow and expand. Both practices encourage specific activities during the Spring season to aid in the process of creating space.

In order to embrace this new season and to see true change in ourselves and our lives, Ayurveda teaches that creating a consistent and steady practice is key. This practice can be anything from going to a daily yoga class, taking 5 minutes to meditate each morning, or just remembering to breathe deeply throughout your day and smile more!

Here are some simple ideas to help implement more good space in your life, and be the You you were meant to be!

Unplug! The over stimulation and abundance of technology in our daily lives can be overwhelming and can keep us from following our true selves. Give your mind and body a rest from all the noise and bring your focus inward.

Salute to the Sun- Roll out your mat and start each morning with a round of Sun Salutations (Surya Namaskar). This helps bring you out of the dark winter, and gets the energy and life force in your body moving!

Fire up your breath- Practice Kapalabhati, a breathing technique for mind and body purification.  (Women who are pregnant should sit this one out)

Squats-Add squats into your routine, which help lighten and free up "good space" in your lower half, which is the densest part of the body.

Mindfulness- Stay mindful about your energy. Did something easily make you mad? Were you able to shrug it off? Remain conscious of your actions and reactions, and let your deep breathing kick in in times of distress. With each exhale release the things that are not serving you. Breathe in all that beauty and blooming around you!

Have a light and happy Spring NYC!
