We generally recommend frequent and regular treatments when patients get started, so we can best see how you respond to treatment and you can recognize results and gain confidence in the process. In many cases, as symptoms lessen for longer periods of time, we can start reducing the frequency of treatment.
While some patients feel immediate relief or significantly better with each treatment, this does not mean the condition is resolved. Perhaps a good analogy is the use of antibiotics where instead of taking a pill once, you are prescribed a course of treatment that can last for days or weeks. Even if you feel markedly better after a short time, you still need to complete the course of treatment to ensure the best outcome.
Acupuncture is the same. We are changing the way your body is balanced, and this is not something that typically happens in one treatment. Your body needs time to learn how to rebalance itself, so it won’t revert to its old ways.
During your first visit, your acupuncturist will recommend a number and frequency of treatments before we reassess. An example of a typical recommendation is “twice a week for four weeks,” though it could be more or less often depending on various factors, including your health goals and lifestyle. Acupuncture treatments can take time to work and to provide lasting results.
