Tension headaches and migraines have different origins and respond to somewhat different approaches. Tension headaches are primarily muscular — driven by tension in the neck, scalp, and jaw — and often respond quickly to local needling of trigger points, sometimes with relief within a few sessions. Migraines involve the neurovascular system, so treatment focuses more on regulating the nervous system and underlying patterns in TCM terms. If you experience both types, as many people do, your acupuncturist will diagnose your specific pattern and combine approaches accordingly.
